Cleveland Cavalier fans may have to remember that moment as the final moment they saw their #1 son in a Cavaliers uniform, as the season and possibly the career of LeBron James came to an end at that time after falling in game 6 in Boston 94-85.
Unlike last season when James was so distraught over losing in six games to the Orlando Magic, this time he took the time to shake hands and whisper words to all the Celtics that came up to shake his hand. While anger and pure frustration had to be flowing from Cavs fans all over Ohio, James simply looked defeated.
He gave his mother a quick kiss, and took his jersey off before he even entered the locker room. It was a sight that many Cavs fans didn’t think they would see until the team was hoisting a trophy signaling an NBA championship at some point in June.
Thursday night the team played like a team fighting for their lives, but in the end they clearly were once again outplayed by a Boston team thought to be too old, not as talented, and nothing more than a stepping stone for a rematch with Orlando in the Eastern Conference Finals.
Instead, once again the city of Boston celebrates, while Cleveland cries over what could have been. Boston for almost the entire series played loose, showed a lot more energy and heart, and never seemed rattled, unlike the Cavs who like Mike Brown admitted never had a flow to the series.
James did his best, scoring 27 points, 19 rebounds and 10 assists. He got support finally from Mo Williams, who had 22 points, but it seemed like the rest of the team was nowhere near as effective as they were when leading the NBA in wins in the regular season.
So let what is sure to be the most critical offseason in franchise history begin. James’ future, along with that of Brown, Shaquille O’Neal and Zydrunas Ilgauskas will all be on the line once the team cleans out their lockers on Friday.
But it starts and ends with James, and if Thursday night was his final game in Cleveland, it will for sure go down as the biggest flop for maybe the biggest star the city has ever seen.
