In conjunction with the Cavaliers Fit as A Pro program presented by Medical Mutual, Saturday afternoon 40 youngsters from Cleveland Clinic’s Healthy Futures program will participate in a special fitness and nutrition event at Cleveland Clinic Courts to learn important tips about good eating habits, cardio exercise and healthy lifestyle choices.  On hand to make the experience even more memorable will be Cavaliers players Leon Powe, Danny Green, Darnell Jackson and Sebastian Telfair!

The 4th and 5th graders from St. Thomas Elementary School in Cleveland will have the opportunity to listen and ask questions about the good stuff to eat from Registered Dietitian Katherine Mone from the Cleveland Clinic Sports Health Center. Then, under the instruction of the National Basketball Academy trainer Jermaine Gay and staff, the group will take to the basketball court with the players for some cardio basketball. Cardio basketball, which was developed by the National Basketball Academy, is a series of basketball drills that challenges participants physically because they are always in motion. It raises the heart rate and forces the body to burn calories and fat a lot faster than most other physical activities.

About Healthy Futures

In an effort to target the worldwide obesity problem and promote positive health behavior, the Cleveland Clinic Sports Health Center developed the Healthy Futures program in 2007. This 10-week curriculum is designed to encourage students, parents and family members to make healthier food choices, develop a positive attitude about nutrition, exercise, safety, and to encourage a positive self image. In addition, the program aims to demystify and help participants understand the dangers of tobacco, alcohol, and drugs.  The program is designed for 8-12 year olds and for administration in both the community and school setting.

About Fit as a Pro: The Cavaliers “Fit as A Pro” program, presented by Medical Mutual, is designed to encourage physical fitness and well-balanced nutrition among elementary school students in Northeast Ohio. Participating classrooms track the amount of physical activity they get each day and use a nutritional poster with information such as the food pyramid and sample diets of the Cavaliers as a teaching tool.
